Airbrushing and it's effects

Its not just woman who images are manipulated! Men are also pressured into looking good through unrealistic imagery. Although it is widely used for woman it is harder to find images that have manipulated men. Much of the focus against airbrushing is on woman. I am interested in finding views from men of the use of airbrushing.

Celebrity Airbrushing before and after

The images below have all been airbrushed to make the models look slimmer. Previously to researching into this subject I was aware that photoshop could create many different effect. However from looking at these images I had no idea that a model could be made to drop a dress size and for it still to look like a human being( not including other applied techniques) I was unaware that the techniques used were this advanced!! I really did think that the modles below were that slim. I recognised that they had been airbrushed but not to that extent. I am horrified at what effect this could have n a younger generation who are too young to be aware that these images are manipulated and these images images are fed to people on a daily basis.

In this article it looks at the images of Beyonce Knowles for cosmetic adverts where her skin has clearly been lightened. Again this is the company Löreal who are creating these un realist images.

Sky news reporting on ANOTHER Löreal advert that had been banned as the images were too unachievable.  The image from the advert compared to a photograph of her on the red carpet are completely different, the image in the advert is clearly enhanced and to me does not look like her.

'The rise of the beautiful generation:an airbrushed dream.'
This is an article published by the Evans review online 30/11/2011 It documents that the experiment and finding of Dartmouth college who reviewed many images used in the media and rated them on a scale of 1-5 (5 being extremely altered.)

Again these images concentrate on creating perfect skin. Their is an enormous difference between many of the photo's. The before shows an image of a person who you would see walking down the street. The after images show flawless woman who look angelic and glowing.

Images of Airbrushing

Here are some very typical airbrushing techniques used in advertising, found in magazines articles, film posters and cosmetic images all have been used on a global scale.

 Beyonce, breasts enlarged, skin lightened, dark shadows removed and lips plumped and make up enhanced (colours brightened etc.) The crease that would naturally occur while in this position has been smoothed over.

All of the above, lighten the skin giving it a glow. A word often used to advertise cosmetic products. All skin blemishes such as wrinkles, spots, fine lines dark circles and even freckles have all been removed! These images are covering up the truth. Therefore lying to cosumers about what products can acheive I feel that this is unaceptable and should not be allowed.

More research!

Hoorah!! An advert that has finally been banned for has misleading images. Loreal's advertising campaign in 2010 for Lancome's Teint miracle foundation, who Julia Roberts models and Maybelline's miracle eraser foundation. Were found unrealistic according to the ASA.  The ASA states that retouching is aloud along as its not "misleading" which brings me back to one of my original questions on the topic, How much airbrushing is too far?

'Beauty and the beast' This was a documentary for channel four that looked at what beauty really is. The program looks at the use of airbrushing for magazines especially 'Lads mags' The gentleman who is carrying out the photo enhancements  believes that the images he creates are  un healthy, but believes along as people are aware that this is not real that it is 'ok.' He also states that each of  his clients has to 'keep up' with the current look that their competitors are portraying otherwise they will be 'left behind.' While this is happening he will continue to enhance models assists. This is a vicious circle as it will keep on happening unless someone breaks this cycle.
